In a beautifully decorated black and white set, erected near the city airport, Nayanthara and Arya were busy dancing and analysing the importance of Kumabakonam vethalai for Rajesh’s Boss Engira Baskaran (BEB) when we caught up with them.
“This is the last day of the schedule. And after this song, the shooting for BEB is officially over,” smiles Nayanthara. “I’m feeling quite relaxed now. We had super fun shooting for BEB. The movie, like Rajesh’s previous hit, Siva Manasula Sakthi (SMS), is quite hilarious. There was not a single moment when we were stressed out,” she says.
Talking about the film, she says, “BEB is the story of a middle-class family that faces common issues. I play Chandrika, a middle class, sensible girl. She expects everyone to be practical in life.”Nayanthara is all praise for her co-star and director. “Arya was so much fun to work with. He is always playful and never ever serious on the sets,” she discloses.
Rajesh, she says, is a sensible director. “Though he’s new to the industry, he knows exactly what the audience wants. Even if he falters with the ‘want’ factor, he’s sure what the audiences wouldn’t want to see on screen. He hasn’t committed any mistakes that other newcomers would. He brings out the best in his actors. At a time when people were getting bored with the routine mass masala movies, he came out with SMS, which kept the audience entertained,” she says.
There have been reports that Nayanthara had decided to concentrate only on off-beat movies and had said no to glamour. Ask her if these reports are true and she nonchalantly says, “As an actress, I’ve to be versatile. If I think a character would suit me, I would definitely go ahead and grab the offer without any hesitation. I have done girl-next-door roles like that in Yaaradi Nee Mohini and Chandramukhi and glamorous roles like the one in Aegan. And I think I’m lucky to have been able to portray both with efficiency. I’m not bothered about having an ‘image’ in the film industry. I believe that whatever role I take up, I have to do it convincingly. I’m not the one to judge my success. The audience will do it for me.”
So, what after BEB? “I’m doing Electra in Malayalam. I’m also in talks with director Prasad for Mathilukalkkappuram. Resul Pookutty and Ravi K Chandran too are part of the technical team of this film, which will have sync sound,” she signs off.
